| AVON OF YESTERDAY AND OF TODAY |
 |
The etymology of Avon stems from the Celtic word ‘avo’, which means water, bearing witness to its long past.
The commune is home to important places steeped in history such as the Priory of the Basses Loges (where Gurdjieff and K. Mansfield stayed), the Convent of Carmes, the domain of Bel Ebat, melting-pot of French music, and in particular the Saint Pierre Church from the 11th century which was a royal parish until 1661.
Let us not forget the viaduct of the railway, built in 1847 and inaugurated by Napoleon III in 1852.
Since then, the city has expanded and been modernised, whilst preserving its green environment and its architectural heritage
